Tel Aviv Old Port - Scripted Uncertainty / Final Studio project, mentored by architects Amir Mann and Gabi Shwarts.
The project presents a new urban plan for the (then) deserted and run down old Tel Aviv port area. (Today, 13 years later, the whole area has been completely renewed and gentrified, and is one of the city's main public spaces).
The project dealt with several questions arising from the research: The balance between cheos and order, public and private as well as the impact of the local history and the natural surroundings of sea and river.
The plan's main goals were to somehow conserve the naturally existing cheos as well as the lively variation of public activities, thereby preserving the sense of place. This is done in 3 ways:
1. Re-defining the relationship between public and private spaces through a new building section which mixes private and public uses, with a "green gap" in between.
2. A tile based urban plan - an open system which allows for many different local architectural situations while maintaining an overall urban order.
3. The mechanism driving the urban design is a formative lexicon, defining several principle sections for the waterfront, riverfront and inner areas, and a clear design language. At the same time it allows for expressive freedom within the fixed lot and section,
A superposition of all the parameters, and the architecture that can be thus created is shown: The open-system plan and formative lexicon create infinite variations (cheos, uncertainties, freedom) within fixed guidelines (order, script).
The project won the Arthur Guggenheim Award in the departmental student competition, and an honorable mention in the the national Azriely student competition.
